The Crosses

The Crosses – A 53 mile circular challenge around the North York Moors taking in a number of the moorland crosses.

Last held in 2015 we have no plans to run The Crosses as an organised event in the immediate future.

However as the routes follow public rights of way you may wish to do them in your own time.

Perhaps you may wish to give a small donation to the team on our Justgiving page if you enjoy them ?

First run in the early 1970s to raise valuable funds for the then Scarborough and District Search and Rescue Team the event starts and finishes in Goathland and traditionally has to be completed within 24 hours. You are welcome to walk or run the challenge (or a combination of both !).

The event was held through the 70’s and 80’s but, unfortunately the team had to call a halt when entries had fallen to such an extent that it was uneconomical to hold the event.

The team resurrected the event as a one off just our fiftieth anniversary in 2015 over the weekend 4th – 5th July 2015.

Chris from Reaction Photography  kindly offered to provide professional photographic services to each event in 2015 to help the team. A galleries of the event is here.

Malcolm Boyes wrote a paperbook on the route called ‘The Crosses Walk – 53 miles over the North York Moors’ which was published by  Dalesman Publishing Co Ltd; 2nd Revised edition edition (July 1979).  Unfortunately this is now out of print but may still be available through Amazon or ebay.

There is a gallery of images of most of the crosses below.
