Joint training with the York Rescue Boat

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue have a remit, on behalf of North Yorkshire Police, for Search and Rescue along the many rivers which flow through our area, lakes, ponds, water margins and flooded area.  York Rescue Boat is a new charity and organisation set up in York to provide a physical and proactive commitment to furthering the safety of the rivers in and around York.

There are clear synergies between the two charities and in order to build relationship and share knowledge the teams held a joint training exercise on the River Ouse in the middle of York on the evening of Wednesday 17th of June. The training focused on water rescue with both bank side throwline techniques and rescue from the boat.  After a number of single incidents to exercise rescue with various medical scenario and both cooperative uncooperative casualties the evening culminated with a multi casualty incident focused in the river around the area of Queen’s Staith.

Dave Benson, founder of the York Rescue Boat, said:

“There were six people in the water at points, a couple at a time, and we recovered them with the boat or with ropes, utilising our guys on the shore. It’s the kind of practice you can only get with live incidents.

“The Scarborough guys were shouting at us and swimming away from us, or acting drunk. One acted as if he had a broken leg, so they were putting us in situations which we can expect to come across while on patrol.

Ian Hugill, Public Relations Officer from SRMRT, said:

“Tragically, and all to often,  Scarborough and Ryedale MRT are called to search the River Ouse in a recovery rather than a rescue tasking and it is great to see the volunteers of the York Rescue Boat taking a proactive approach to protecting the residents and visitors of York in and around the rivers which cut through the center of the city”.  We look forward continued training with the York Rescue Boat to be ready for that day when are required to work together on an operational incident.
